Introduction

In-depth interpretation of the size definitions and methods of human body measurement for clothing (GB/T 16160—2017)

Standard dimensions Contents of the new standard Differences from the old standard
Standard name Changed to “Size Definitions and Methods of Human Body Measurement for Clothing” Original name: “Parts and Methods of Human Body Measurement for Clothing”
Scope of application Applicable to the human body size measurements required for all types of clothing Deleted the definition of baby size and added more vertical and horizontal dimension measurements
Measurement method Detailed definitions of key measurement points such as cervical vertebrae and acromion points have been added Measurement of some complex parts has been reduced, and measurement tools and conditions have been optimized

Explanation of professional terms and practical application cases

Take soft tape and human stadiometer as examples. These two tools are basic equipment in clothing measurement. The following are definitions of several key terms and their applications in clothing design:

  • Chest girth: The maximum horizontal circumference measured by a soft tape through the shoulder blade, armpit and nipple when the person being measured stands upright with his arms hanging naturally. It is suitable for determining the chest size of women's and children's clothing.
  • Waist girth: With feet together and abdomen relaxed, use a tape measure to measure the horizontal circumference at the waistline. It is a key data for designing tight clothing.
  • Calf girth: With the subject standing upright and legs relaxed, measure the horizontal circumference at the thickest part of the calf. It is especially important for the design of trousers.

For example, when designing a pair of casual pants, the designer needs to comprehensively consider the data of hip circumference, waist circumference and calf circumference to ensure that the pants shape meets the body characteristics of the target consumers.
