Interpretation of the core content of the standard

GB/T 31489.3-2020, as an important part of the DC transmission cable series standard, has formulated technical specifications specifically for cross-linked polyethylene insulated DC submarine cables with rated voltages of 500kV and below. This standard specifies the full process requirements from material properties to acceptance rules.

Insulation material performance indicators

The standard specifies two types of cross-linked polyethylene insulation materials:

  • DC-XLPE-70: 70℃ long-term operating temperature, 180℃ short-circuit tolerance
  • DC-XLPE-90: 90℃ long-term operating temperature, 250℃ short-circuit tolerance

Key performance requirements include:

  • Power frequency breakdown strength ≥30kV/mm
  • DC breakdown strength ≥100kV/mm
  • Thermal extension permanent deformation ≤10%

Implementation suggestions

  1. Material selection: DC-XLPE-90 insulation material should be given priority in submarine environment
  2. Structural design: Double steel wire armor structure is recommended for 500kV cables
  3. Test verification: Space charge test and long-term water tightness test must be carried out
