Introduction

Standard Development Background and Technological Evolution

With the rapid development of intelligent and connected vehicles, in-vehicle displays have become a core component of modern vehicle cockpits. The release of the national standard GB/T 46022-2025, "Cover Glass for Automotive Displays," fills a gap in my country's standards for automotive display cover glass. Proposed by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and managed by the National Technical Committee for Automotive Standardization, this standard leverages the technical expertise of over 20 industry-leading companies, including Fuyao Glass and Xinjing Special Glass.

Term Definitions and Classification System

The standard clearly defines cover glass for automotive displays as "transparent glass material used on the display surface and protecting the display components within a motor vehicle." Depending on whether or not it has been coated, it is categorized into standard automotive display cover glass and coated automotive display cover glass.

ClassificationCharacteristic requirementsApplication scenarios
Ordinary cover glassBasic optical properties, mechanical strengthOrdinary vehicle display
Coated cover glassAnti-glare, anti-fingerprint and other additional functionsHigh-end smart cockpit display

Analysis of core technical requirements

Appearance quality requirements

The standard strictly classifies the appearance defects of cover glass: point defects with a diameter of less than 0.1mm are not counted; defects of 0.1-0.3mm do not exceed 2/piece in the viewing area and the spacing must be ≥10mm; defects larger than 0.3mm are absolutely prohibited. Surface cracks, scratches, glass tendons, edge collapse and other visually visible defects are not allowed.

Optical performance indicators

The visible light transmittance must be no less than 89% to ensure the clarity of the display. The glossiness of the coated glass with anti-glare function should be less than 120Gu to effectively reduce the interference of ambient light.

Mechanical performance requirements

Performance indicatorsRequired valuesTest methods
Surface stress (CS)≥550MPaBirefringence stress meter method
Vickers hardness≥5.80GPaSmall load Vickers hardness indentation method
Impact resistance≤1 piece broken among 6 pieces227g steel ball 600mm height impact

Functional coating performance

The contact angle of anti-fingerprint coated glass to water shall not be less than 105°. The contact angle shall not change by more than 10° after the abrasion resistance test. The contact angle shall not change by more than 5° after the corrosion resistance and high temperature and high humidity resistance tests.

Test Method Details

Environmental Conditions

All tests were conducted under a standard temperature of 20°C ± 5°C and a relative humidity of 40%-80% to ensure the comparability and accuracy of the test results.

Specialized Testing Equipment

The standard recommends using a birefringence stress meter based on an optical waveguide principle to measure surface stress and DOL values. Functional testing was performed using a wear resistance test device that complies with QC/T 1171-2022.

Inspection Rules Implementation Key Points

Factory Inspection Items

Four basic indicators are included: appearance quality, dimensional deviation, warpage, and visible light transmittance. The sampling plan based on GB/T 2828.1-2012 is used, with an AQL of 1.5.

Comprehensiveness of Type Inspection

Type inspection covers all 17 technical requirements and is mandatory for new product finalization, major process changes, and periodic inspections.

Packaging, Storage, and Transportation Specifications

Products should be packaged in wooden boxes or containers with built-in cushioning and anti-scratch spacers. Packaging markings must include basic information such as product name, manufacturer name, specifications, and quantity, along with warnings such as "Point upward, handle with care, store upright, protect from rain and moisture."

Implementation Recommendations and Industry Impact

Implementation Recommendations for Manufacturers

Glass manufacturers are advised to establish a comprehensive quality control system, focusing on controlling chemical strengthening process parameters to ensure consistent surface stress and DOL values meet standards. Coating companies should optimize the AF (anti-fingerprint) coating process to enhance abrasion and environmental resistance.

Application Recommendations for Vehicle Manufacturers

When selecting vehicle display cover glass, vehicle manufacturers should choose plain or coated products based on the vehicle's positioning and establish an incoming material inspection system, focusing on verifying impact resistance and environmental reliability indicators.

Service Recommendations for Testing Agencies

Testing agencies should be equipped with specialized equipment such as birefringence stress gauges and Vickers hardness testers, establish comprehensive testing capabilities, and provide authoritative third-party testing services to the industry.

Technological Development Trends

As automotive displays evolve towards larger sizes, curved surfaces, and more specialized shapes, the technical requirements for cover glass will continue to increase. Future standards may need to add methods for evaluating the optical properties of curved glass and testing the mechanical properties of flexible glass to adapt to technological development needs.

The implementation of this standard will promote technological advancement and quality improvement in the automotive display cover glass industry, providing important technical support for the healthy development of my country's automotive electronics industry.
