Scope

This standard specifies the method for testing the power characteristics of a single wind turbine. In addition, this standard describes the test method for power characteristics of small wind turbines (wind turbines defined in IEC 61400-2) connected to the grid and connected to battery packs. The test method can be used to evaluate the performance of a specific wind turbine in a specific geographic location. Likewise, the method can be used to make general comparisons of wind turbines of different types or different setups. This standard applies to grid-connected wind turbines of all types and capacities. The power characteristics of a wind turbine are determined by measuring the power curve and the annual energy production (AEP). The measured power curve is determined by the wind speed and wind turbine output power collected synchronously within a certain period of time. The period of time should be long enough so that a statistical database can be established under a certain range of wind speed and changes in atmospheric conditions. The AEP is calculated using the measured power curve and the frequency distribution of the reference wind speed, assuming 100% availability of the wind turbines. The measurement methods specified in this standard require an evaluation of the sources of uncertainty and their combined effects on the measured power curves and annual production.
