Introduction

Analysis of the core content of the standard

This standard is equivalent to EN 1230-1:2001, which specifies the sensory evaluation method for the odor release of paper and paperboard materials for food contact. It is applicable to all types of paper products that come into direct or indirect contact with food, including coatings and printed materials.

Key Technical Elements

Elements Technical requirements Implementation points
Sample preparation 6dm² samples are cut into 1cm×5cm strips Aluminum foil packaging is required to prevent contamination, and multi-layer materials should be tested as a whole
Test environment Put in the dark at 23±2℃ for 20-24h The flask needs to be made of brown glass or covered to avoid light
Evaluation team ≥6 selected evaluators Special training is required, and ≤5 samples are tested at a time
Grade determination 0-4 integer score Intensity ≥ 2 requires description of odor characteristics

Key points for standard implementation

1. Laboratory construction requirements

Required equipment: Odorless environmental chamber (GB/T 13868), 590mL flat-bottom flask (conical ground mouth), constant temperature and light-proof storage equipment. The cleaning procedure should comply with the requirements of Appendix A, and it is recommended to establish a 0-4 level odor reference system.

2. Evaluator training system

A three-level training mechanism is established based on GB/T 14195: Basic sensory training → Paper material special training → Regular calibration test. It is recommended to retest the reference sample every month, and retraining is required if the deviation is greater than 1.5 levels.

Technical evolution analysis

This standard first introduced the European method in 2001, and maintained technical consistency when it was converted into the Chinese industry standard in 2012. The current international trend shows:

  • Combination of electronic nose technology and sensory analysis (ISO 16000-28:2020)
  • Correlation between VOCs quantitative analysis and odor evaluation (EN 17681:2022)
  • Study on accelerated aging test conditions (40℃/72h equivalence verification)

Solutions to common problems

Problem phenomenon Possible causes Solution measures
High discreteness of evaluation results Reference system failure/evaluator fatigue Update reference samples, control single test ≤5 samples
Background odor interference Poor laboratory ventilation Install activated carbon filtration system and control humidity at 50%±5%
Abnormal values of coating samples Unstable release of volatile substances Increase equilibrium time to 48h and record temperature and humidity fluctuations
